Private flute and recorder lessons
All students will be instructed on basic technique including tone production, breathing, facility, rhythm, reading music, playing
by ear, musicianship and intonation. Special emphasis will be placed on playing for life-long enjoyment. Students will be
encouraged to explore the literature that most interests them: classical, jazz, world music or all of the above. For advanced
students, Conant will assist with efficient practicing to improve technique, accuracy and speed and preparation of literature
for auditions, all-state contests and recitals. Advanced recorder students will gain facility in c and f fingerings, explore early
music performance practice and ornamentation, and learn to read alternate clefs.
Beginning Recorder Ensemble --
Playing music with others is a wonderful way to remain happy, active and mentally alert throughout your lifetime. And
learning the recorder is a great way to do it. With an easy hand position and simple blowing technique, you will be able to
produce a musical sound quickly and begin progressing immediately. Students will learn how to gain facility with the
fingerings, breathe easily to produce confident tones, read music and play in an ensemble. Once these basics have been
mastered you will be moved into a group ensemble suitable to your level.
Intermediate Recorder Ensemble - Wednesdays at 2:00 at Hungry Monk Music in West Ashley
Once students have learned a basic facility on the recorder, they will use their skills to make music together. Participants will
explore a range of music from medieval through modern on recorders of all sizes. Each meeting will include sight reading,
technique practice and preparation of repertoire for performance. Depending upon enrollment, the group may be divided
according to member’s playing levels. Players of any age are welcome. The group will explore alternative voicing, percussion
and other early music instruments and develop arrangements with that special zing. Participants should have a basic playing
ability (know the fingerings for notes in the key of C,D,G and F) and know how to read music.
